Conventions of a CD

How I will challenge/follow conventions:
I am unsure whether I want to shoot my artist using a head shot/medium shot as believe that having a side profile may make the CD stand out among others given her diverse pose. Opposed to only using one type of font I will use a different style of font for my artists name for promotional purposes, as I believe that this will make her name stand out.

However, I do believe that only using three colours will make my CD visually appealing. I also want my artists persona to be represented through the use of her makeup, hair and outfit and if possible the background.

video inspiration

There are two frames in this video that I wish to include in my own promotion. The first being when the artist is looking out of the window whilst on a train and when there is a city backdrop. I believe that having diverse clips will make my music promotion video more interesting, thus keeping my viewers captivated. I dislike how this video is black and white throughout as I think that it's rather bland and do not think that my target auidence, female teenagers, will stay captivated as popular music video's such as 'Primadonna' have an array of lighting to make the video interesting. Therefore I am going to experiment by using an array of diverse lighting and editing. I love the artists appearence in this video, the simple black dress suggests a rather laid back attitude apposed to videos where popular singers wear an array of designer outfits. I am going to take the same approach when deciding what outfit my artist will wear as I believe that the teenage girls will be able to relate; given that they will wear similar clothing. I believe that the artists heavy makeup and wild hair suggests that she is using a rebellious persona. When styling my artist I also want her to wearing heavy eye makeup as I want her persona to be apparent, that she is not the idealistic suburban teenager.
I will use a similar frame

I wish to use this particular frame as it definitely fits in with the theme of my chosen song as teenage girls often use public transport whilst thinking about events concerning their lives. Thus, I believe that my target audience will be able to relate to this particular scene.

I like the framing of this video as I think that the location definitely gives the frame interesting visual impact which has proven to me how important location choice is.

Although the content of the lyrics in this song are  mature, "Maybe if you let me be your lover", and depict a broken relationship I believe that the park scene was rather symbolic. I think that having the artist simply swinging reminds the auidence that she is still young, this makes her relatable to her target auidence of teenager girls as they either go to this location or have just stopped. I too will use a park in my own music video as the lyrics from the song 'Teen idle' reflect on what a more older woman wished she had done as a teenager. Therefore, I believe that putting her in a youthful surroundings will emphasise the video's purpose and theme.

I believe that incorporating fashion related props such as: shoes, makeup and clothes will interest my target audience of teenage girls; an aspect I will consider when finalising what props to use.
Even though I like the blur editing in this video I personally think that there is too much of it. In order to avoid ruining my own promotion video I am going to bring up the topic of editing when gathering audience feedback. Another minor aspect of the video I dislike is the tap water, I believe that it appears out of place and irrelevant.

I find the style of editing used in this video interesting because it is as if the lighting reflects the lyrics. When the artist is singing slow and downbeat black and white lighting is used which then changes to colour as the music begins to pick up. I personally think that the hand gesture the artist uses when the screen turns to colour is to represent that she lives in her own little world; the lyrics 'yeah i've been living in the state of dreaming' make me come to this conclusion.
Since I am using a Marina and the Diamonds video for my promotion I am going to take this take on lighting into consideration as the lyrics of 'Teen idle' frequently change from positive to negative.

Brief proposal

The brief I would like to persue is 'A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with a magazine advertisement for the digipak and a cover for its release as part of a digipak.'I have decided to choose this brief as I have an interest in music and often wait for new albums to be released, thus I thought this brief was most suited to my knowledge. Although I took part in film at GCSE level I believe that shooting a music promotion video to a higher standard will be an interesting challenge. As I created magazine pages last year at AS level I feel fairly confident that I will be able to broaden my knowledge on the conventions used for posters, also developing my Photoshop skills and perhaps experimenting with diverse tools.

I wish to research the electro pop genre as it is becoming increasingly popular as artists such as 'Ke$ha' and 'Ellie Goulding' fall in to that category; therefore there will be a wider audience that will view my products. My CD will take a similar approach to the examples below. My artist will be the main focus, where her persona will be portrayed through her appearance and the use of fonts and backgrounds.

Video and music:
The track I am going to choose will be from the artist 'Marina and The Diamonds' as her lyrics are meaningful yet playful. I have a slight idea of what I wish to achieve concerning the music promo video, however I believe that my idea's will change drastically once I begin to research more thoroughly. Before I finalise on a particular idea I wish to research other artists of a similar genre to see if I prefer their style of video or lyrics more. My three main inspirations at the moment are: Sky Ferreira, Marina and the Diamonds, and Lana Del Rey. Although Lana Del Rey has a rather diverse appearance compared to my other inspirational artists I love her music videos as they usually have a narrative portrayed that my primary audience will be able to connect with.

Artist persona:
I want my video to feature a strong willed character who my target audience of female teenagers will be able to relate to. When shooting my music video I want my artist to be a likeable, relatable character and for the lyrics to be portrayed throughout the music video. Overall, Marina and the Diamonds is my main inspiration for when I build my artists persona as she definitely tried to emphasise the independent, strong woman and proves to her listeners that they should never be belittled by anyone.
Marina and the Diamonds: Interview

  • Did someone in particular inspire your single Primadonna? Or is it metaphorical? Yes. When you are with the wrong person, who doesn't really love you, all you want is to be adored. It makes you more inward and needy. GROSS. So I flipped the pages and channeled the idea of being a person who didn't need anybody. A primadonna who was adored the entire world over.
  • What made you reach for the bottle and go blonde? Blonde symbolises sexuality and power - it holds very different connotations. The archetypal star has always been blonde. I wanted to see how it felt.

Reflection of AS coursework

At AS level I created a music magazine which was aimed at teenagers who listened to the pop-punk/rock genre. I created three pages: front page, contents, and double page spread.

This experience broadened my knowledge on magazine conventions and also allowed me to develop my Photoshop skills. When taking photographs for my magazine I used a professional studio, therefore becoming familiarised with the equipment and learning how to use it properly. During this project I researched an array of diverse music magazine's in order to create my own with the best possible knowledge, thus making it successful. After I compared my first preliminary task to my finished product it educated me on just how beneficial research is to make my coursework successful, an aspect I will always take into consideration during A2.

Overall I was rather proud of the three pages once completed, after comaping 'RECKLESS' to my preliminary task it was apparent that I'd learnt a lot from researching diverse magazines and made aware of typical conventions. If I could have done anything differently it would definitely be the front covers main image as my model's face appears out of focus. In A2 I am going to ensure that all of my photographs are in focus and have interesting visual impact to ensure that my work will be succesful.
